“So, weather you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31
In our lives, there has to be a purpose for everything that we do each and every day. In 1 Corinthians 10: 31, Paul says that purpose should be the glory of God. We should all strive to glorify God because it is what we were created to do. God created us to bring Him glory, but if were honest with ourselves, we would have to admit that in certain circumstances, it is very difficult to do. It is in those circumstances that we will have to strive to do our best, in order to achieve this goal.
1 Corinthians 10: 23-33, gives excellent examples of what it looks like to glorify God in all things.
- Seek the good of others. Verse 24 says, “Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.” In his book Humility, C.J. Mahaney helps us understand what it looks like to seek the good of one’s neighbor, instead of always looking out for number one. He asks, “Do you look at those around you only to find one blemish after another? This proud tendency is a deep rooted habit for many of us who have sown seeds of self-exaltation over the years.” He also suggests that we should be “actively looking for ways that God is at work in the lives of other people.” The practical instructions that C.J. Mahaney gives, are excellent suggestions for the Christian who wants to glorify God in all things. In this case, the focus is on how we treat others. And pride is something that gets in the way of our glorifying God from time to time. In order to glorify God in the way we treat others, we must look at other people with the motive to identify evidences of grace in them, instead of looking for blemishes.
- Eat and drink to the glory of God. Verse 31 says, “So, weather then you eat or drink,” you should do it, “to the glory of God.” Did you know that you can eat or drink, and do it to the glory of God? You can, and here are a few ways to do this. You can receive it thankfully. Pray to God, thanking Him for the food and drink provided for you. Even though you bought the food, He provided it for you. And Share your food with the hungry. God’s Word says in the gospels that Jesus gave fish and loaves of bread to the starving. If Jesus did this, than we most certainly can too. Be humble, and give out food to the starving.
- Try not to offend others. Verse 32 says, “Give no offense either to Jews or to the Greeks or to the Church of God.” Have you ever been offended by something, or offended someone by being rude to them? This is something that we have to avoid. We cannot glorify God by offending other people. As I stated in my first bullet point, we should identify evidence of grace in others, instead of looking for blemishes. Don’t offend someone in any way, be kind, compassionate, and gentle towards others, and look for evidence of grace in them as well.
- Seek the salvation of others. Verse 33 says, “Just as I also please men in all things, not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, so that they may be saved.” We need to seek the salvation of others. In this broken and battered world, people need to be saved. There is a message to be said to the world, and that message is the gospel of Jesus. Seek the salvation of others, and seek the profit of many, so that they may be saved.
Glorifying God is being conducted to the honor of God. When you glorify God, you honor Him. When you honor God by glorifying Him in everything that you do, you are doing exactly what you, me, and all of the rest of the world are called and created to do. Since the creation of the universe and Adam and Eve, God created us to bring Him glory. And we do that by giving everything to Him, giving our lives to Him, trying to be like Jesus, and being God-fearing stewards of His Word.
Until then,
Wayde
