At some point in our lives we’ve got to ask the question,”What are my priorities?” Let’s face it, there are a lot of things in this life that can become a priority for us. For me, I would say that my priorities can change, and I think that all of our priorities change. However, there are usually a few that are in the “Top” list that we never let slip away.
For example, I can say that my “Top” Priorities all the time are as follows: (1) My relationship with God. (2) Family. (3) Fitness. (4) My Job. (5) Hobbies & Friends.
Do some of these shift in their order? Yes. Is that okay? Yes. We have to accept the fact that in this life we are going to get busy. Sometimes my job is going to require me to work extra hours or work a long weekend, it can’t be stopped. I have an obligation to go to work, I need a paycheck, and I need to be able to provide. Something that I still struggle with even to this day is my weight. I have lost a significant amount over the course of the past two years, but it is something I still endeavor to get better at each and every day.
I strive to get better in my relationship with God every day. Even if it is simply reading a chapter a day, it is something that I strive to become better at. My mom and I talk frequently, if not every day around 5 pm because I know she gets off from work at that time. I do my best to stay in contact with family. I am a current student at Grand Canyon University, with three more classes to go until I graduate. I will then move on to pursue my Masters Degree from Dallas Theological Seminary over these next five years. I am constantly working on my education.
My hobbies include working out, occasional reading, going to see a movie, playing video games, and when I get the chance to, I will go out and explore on a hiking trail. Some of my priorities are built into my hobbies, but something that I have been working on for quite some time is to see how my relationship with God has grown though all of these areas in my life. From working out, to my job, and spending time with my friends, I can look back and see how and where I have grown.
After reading through all of this, you might be wondering, “Where is the how to section?” Well, I can propose the following steps to managing your priorities:
(1) Urgency: Is what you are doing at the moment something that is urgent?
(2) Importance: What are the things in your life that are of the utmost importance to you? Not to everyone else, not to your boss, but to you.
(3) Desire: Are there areas in your life that you desire to grow and succeed? What might be some of these areas, and how badly do you want it?
I hope you found this helpful! It certainly helped me as I was writing.
Take Care,
Wayde
