Connecting the Dots: The First Dot

When you think about connecting dots, what makes them connect together? Maybe it’s the line being drawn from one dot to another. Maybe it’s the hand that is drawing the line from one dot to the next. If you were to take just 30 seconds to draw a few dots in random places on a napkin or a piece of paper and then connect them together, you would notice something. Each dot cannot be connected together without a previous dot. When you start drawing the line to connect each dot to one another, you also have to start at the first dot.

The beginning of my calling from God started with a dot. Let’s just say that within our lives, the “dot” on the paper is a life-event, or an important time in life. You could say that everyone’s dot starts when they are born, so, let’s start there. When I was born in 1994 in Kissimmee, FL, I was born a whopping 4-months early. I was in the incubator, and my loving parents were there to care for me, talking to me, and loving me. My first dot is when I survived by the grace of God as a very premature baby. The doctors gave me a 50% chance of living, and even more so, they were informing Mom & Dad that I would have numerous problems. As far as I know, I have none of the problems they mentioned.

As I reflect on this today, I am reminded of the providence and grace of God. He has a plan for my life, and for me this plan started at the first dot: the beginning of my life. I am reminded in the Psalms of this: “For you created me in my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Psalm 139:13-14, NIV).

I’m eager to share more of my story with you. This idea of “connecting the dots” came to me after I sat down and talked about my life and story with my brother in Christ Mr. Chris Cartigerone. I met with him early in the morning at his hair shop, and I tell you what, we shared some great stories, spent time in the Word together, and he pointed out the fact that in my story I was able to connect the dots, seeing where God was opening and closing doors. So, I want to encourage you to think about what you would consider your first dot as you have journeyed in life with the Lord. Over these next few weeks I am going to share the various dots in my life where God was working and leading me, so look out for the next post!
