When you think about the term “control” what comes to mind? For me I think about either being in charge of something or directing something with my hands. If you notice in my definition of control, it involves the term me. Being in control of my environment, life, situation, circumstances, and all of it is something that I struggle with sometimes. I wonder if the desire to be in “control” is something that we all share.
Being in control of anything means that you are in charge. As I am sitting on the airplane typing this out, I realize a few things. I am not in control of the aircraft, the pilot is. I am not in control of what happens mid-flight, the pilot is. I am not in control of anything, as I am at the mercy and guidance of the flight crew, and the pilot who is directing and controlling the aircraft. The lives of everyone on board are in the controlling hands of the pilot, as he directs the aircraft to get us to our destination.
We cannot arrive at our destination without the pilot and flight crew, this is a fact. As I write, I think about this step of faith into the unknown that I am currently taking, as I step out of the military to answer the calling that the Lord has placed on my heart to become a Navy Chaplain. If I am the pilot of my own life, then that means the Holy Spirit is not in the cockpit of the aircraft, leading and controlling my life. What I have found out is when I am the one calling the shots, I often find myself down a road that I wasn’t meant to turn on.
Remember when I talked about pursuing a career in Law Enforcement, and how that was not the direction and path for me? This is what I’m talking about. I was in it for myself, and even though I wanted to use Law Enforcement to help others, it was still what I wanted to do. I learned that when I surrender and allow the Holy Spirit to be my guiding pilot, I am able to discover my true purpose in serving Christ, as He leads. I want you to know that I am not suggesting that we are to be removed from the equation. Jesus does not intend for us as Christians to be replaced by Him. Rather, we are to walk with Him as He leads, guides, and controls our life.
Who is the pilot of your life?
