Connecting the Dots: The Second Dot

As I previously shared with the first dot, my starting point was at the beginning of my life. I’ve given a lot of thought as to what my second dot is, and this one is interesting because it involves my father, Shane Morgan. Throughout this mini-series of my life that I call “connecting the dots,” my goal is to share with you the key moments in my life where I believe God was at work. As followers of Jesus, we would love to say that these moments comprise our entire life, as He has ordained every step. But with this perspective, we’re looking at specific moments in life where God was very evidently guiding.

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Philippians 2:4, ESV

The year was roughly 2006, and I was traveling with my dad to a nursing home where he had started a ministry presence through preaching and teaching to the elderly. As I grew up seeing my father’s heart and passion for preaching, I had opportunities to learn what it looks like to provide spiritual and emotional care to people who otherwise did not have that level of care. I was able to develop some sweet relationships with people and little did I know, God was using these times to prepare me for ministry as a pastor in the future.

In the nursing home, I encountered many people who seemingly had no family or anyone to visit with them. There was such a sweet lady who we called Ms. B, and she was always so kind to me and happy to have someone there with her as she was living out her last days. She and I would spend time together as my dad would preach in the nursing home cafeteria. Something she would always say to me was, “You’re going to grow up and do something great one day.” She has since gone to be with the Lord, and everyone loved her very much. What is so great about this story is that as God was using and preparing my dad for ministry at a church in the future, HE was also preparing me as a young man to serve HIM as a pastor in the future, at the same time. Wow, I am overwhelmed with some great memories with people as I write this. God is so good:)

I think that being there for people is one of those gifts that a pastor needs to have, and I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to discover this gift through the ministry that my dad and one of his friends led. It is so true that God prepares His people, and when we take the time to step back and look at the bigger picture, you might be amazed to see where and how the Lord was leading and guiding throughout your life. So, I’ll ask you: what is one of your “dots” that you can connect to? Where have you’ve seen God at work?

  1. Wow, I am so glad that you went with us to the nursing home and that you were paying attention to what was going on at a young age. I remember Ms. B was so sweet.

    1. This is also where you first met Brian Campbell.
