No Ordinary Book

The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul…” Psalm 19:7

As I remain awake in the wee hours of the morning, roughly around 1:30am, as some of you can probably relate to at one moment in time or another in your own life, I was pondering just how amazing the Word of God is.

Over the past month, I’ve been deeply invested into studying the Gospel of Luke for a 15 page school assignment, which is due this Thursday, and is not yet finished. I’ve learned how important it is to read each Gospel account as a separate work, which we call reading them “vertically,” which has helped me tremendously in understanding Luke’s central message and its uniqueness.

There are many aspects of each Gospel that present Jesus in such a way that is unique to the context of each writer, and in Luke I discovered that the main thing is this: Jesus is the One who came to seek and to save the lost (Luke 19:10). This is only recorded in Luke’s Gospel because Jesus says these words during His encounter with Zaccheaus, a great story worth the read that I’ve written about previously.

After making this discovery and thinking about other things I’ve learned throughout my schooling so far, I found myself reading Psalm 19, and there’s a great section where the Psalmist declares this:

More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.” -Psalm 19:10

To some, these words are just more words in some book on a shelf. However, to those who love the Lord, these Words of Truth are indeed more desirable than the finest gold, and more pleasurable than life’s finest delicacies. Not only the written Word, but of course the Word incarnate, Jesus, is as well.

Something happens in my innermost being when I open up the Word, and I can’t really describe it clearly, but I know there is an increasing desire to consume as much of the Word as I can. When I read these Words from no ordinary book, I feel as though God is drawing me closer and closer, and I pray the same happens for you.
